Photo Class - Week 2 Homework

March 28, 2004 | Updates

This week was WAY harder for me. I can tell that I need to work on a few things. First, being REALLY aware of lighting and how I want to use it. Second, posing more than 1 person at a time. I never realized it before, but I usually only shoot 1 person at a time. Throwing in another person really threw me for a loop. Third, the lessons this week were fantastic, but really added to all that is going through my mind when I’m shooting. I guess I’m finally realizing how much work it is to do everything from watching the light to setting the poses to being aware of your surrounding to working your camera…all at the same time. Whew! It taxed my little brain, but in a good way. And last of all, posing with younger kids is harder…definitely.

Oh, and twice this week I learned about being prepared. Once, I shot a picture of my husband with his favorite snowmobiling celebrity only to find my camera was missing its card. Whoops! And then my battery died and I’d left the new one in the car - clear down at the bottom of the stupid hill I almost died climbing. Good times!

So, here are my pictures. I couldn’t seem to vary the pose from my perspective and from theirs in the same set of pictures. It’s going to take some practice for me. And I don’t love most of these pictures, but, again, it was all good practice.

The first 2 are my favorite. Varying where they looked was better than the normal ”looking right at me” theme.

They aren’t looking into the sun, I promise. Just all the snow makes everything too bright for their sensitive blue eyes.

 A few more for fun…

I’m only posting this picture to show what pose I put him in. Trouble was, he kept falling over (so funny)! And, yes, I know I focused on his pants. Not sure what I was thinking. It would have been cute if his face wasn’t blurry.

So, I let him stand up and moved in closer. I learned never to tell him to look up. He’d seriously do a backbend trying to look straight up into the sky :). And I couldn’t keep the snow out of his mouth so I finally just let him eat it :).

I focused on his boots on purpose. Not sure it if like it or not, though. Probably focusing on the rocks in his hands would have been better. But I was intent on the boots and he was intent on the rocks. A lesson in going with the flow when it comes to kids, I guess.

Until next week…

Photo Class - Week 1 Homework

March 20, 2004 | Updates

Ok, here is my homework for week 1.

I drew up a shot list, did some preparation on poses and picked a new location. However, I didn’t get to scout it out much or exhaust the location. I wanted to, believe me :). But Samuel was diagnosed with pneumonia right after church on Sunday and my plans to take pictures Sunday afternoon went right out the window.

Instead, I had my 11 year old throw on his “cowboy stuff,” ride 2 blocks from our house, stand in the rain for about 10 pictures and then run back home with me so I could drive 2 hours to the closest childrens’ hospital. Fun times!

Anyway, Samuel is doing fine and these are the pictures I got. I LOVE the edit that you showed in Lightroom. It adds just the right PUNCH! And preparation helped a TON! Instead of standing there trying to figure out what I should do and where, I had a bunch of pose ideas right in my hand and I could look around and find great locations to try them in. It was just the boost I needed in confidence to not feel dumb trying to figure out how to pose my subject. I felt like I actually knew what I was doing. AND, I felt like I wouldn’t forget a pose I wanted to try because I had my list right there.

Three things I learned…

1. Preparation can make ALL the difference.

2. Have a back-up plan in case of incremental weather - or at least a few umbrellas.

3. Have a back-up date in case of sickness :).

Until next week…

Teresa
