January 2, 2006 | Updates

We are home! Yeah! We actually came home the evening of the 31st - just in time for a little New Year’s celebration with the other boys. Samuel didn’t sleep so well the second night in the hospital and, unfortunately, the fold out chair in his room that I slept on was way too hard so I didn’t sleep much either. But Samuel did take a long morning nap (which I happily took with him). We then headed home about 2 pm and he slept on that ride as well.Samuel still sounds pretty croopy. His lungs have a “crackling” sound in them which is pretty consistent with pneumonia and RSV. But most of his congestion seems to be in the back of his throat. Fortunately, his RSV has not gotten nearly as bad as it could have. We are now through day 5 and things should get better from here.

He is still a little sick to his stomach, but that may be from his antibiotics. And he didn’t sleep well last night again, but I think that’s because we’ve been letting him sleep as much as he wants during the days in hopes to get rid of this virus. Hopefully, things will settle down as he starts feeling better. His mouth has healed amazingly quickly. His bottom lip still is a little swollen and has a large scab on the inside of it. And his tongue still looks sore, but it is a far cry from the first night when his bottom lip swelled so big it was hard as a rock and his cheeks and tongue just wouldn’t stop bleeding. It looks to me like his loose teeth have already taken hold again. But his broken tooth can’t be fixed, so that will be with us now until he is old enough to loose his baby teeth. At least it was a baby tooth! I decided maybe it will be a good reminder when he starts smiling again of all that he has been through and how far he’s come. It will always remind me of harder days that we’ve already passed through and survived!

Otherwise, things are good. Samuel is pretty content for much of the day. I know he still doesn’t feel well because he sleeps so much and acts uncomfortable at times when he’s awake. But he does seem to be on the downhill side of it. One upsetting thing was they had to start cathing him at the hospital again. The first time they did, they got nearly 400 cc’s out, which is about 12 ounces - WAY TOO MUCH for such a little bladder to hold! I have only had to cath him twice so far at home. So, hopefully, he’ll get consistent at going on his own again.

Well, I’m headed to bed, but just wanted to let everyone we’re back home, which is a relief in and of itself. I’d forgotten how much I really don’t like living at the hospital. And I think Samuel feels the same.

Keep up the prayers. We sure appreciate them and can use each and every one of them.

Love,
Tom, Teresa, Tanner, Weston, Ben & Samuel
